HAA were approached by the new owners of The Dutch Cottage to extend the ground floor accommodation of the existing house. The design solution was two separate storey extensions to the east and west of the property. The garden room study was designed in a traditional vernacular to complement the existing architecture. Internal bi-fold doors ensured the extension flowed from the property’s existing kitchen, dining and family area. Glazing to the south elevation provided a connection with the extensive garden. In a deliberate contrast, the utility room to the east was elevated in a more contemporary form with black timber cladding and shallow pitch zinc roof. The existing trees on the site were a material constraint and both extensions respected the tree crown and root protection areas.
